Overtown, one of Miami's pioneer black communities, is experiencing a renaissance. Miami City Commissioner, Chairwoman Christine King, and Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (SEOPW CRA) Executive Director James McQueen are working to return the community to its glory. Together, they identified the need to improve properties within the SEOPW CRA's boundaries.
With a focus on community needs, the SEOPW CRA team has crafted the Façade Beautification and Work Training Program. This initiative, driven by the community, aims to visually enhance structures in Overtown. It involves exterior painting, repairs, and prep work on existing one-, two-, and three-story residential, mixed-use, and commercial buildings. The program is a testament to the community's commitment to restoring its identity, improving street walkability, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The first cohort of participants started their hands-on training at the Overtown Performing Arts Center (OPAC), a facility owned by the SEOPW CRA that holds historical significance as the former Ebenezer Methodist Church.
In collaboration with the Florida International University (FIU) Construction Trades Program, trainees will acquire OSHA 30 certification and other crucial industry skills. This comprehensive training makes them highly employable in the construction industry, contributing to its growth and development. Local community partners, Community Work Training Program (CWTP), and Love Love International have been instrumental in supporting this initiative.
As the program graduates embark on this new chapter, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for success in all their future endeavors. The second cohort of the Façade Beautification and Work Training program has now begun as the program continues.
