(Miami, FL) — On Wednesday, April 1, 2015, City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, CRA Chairman Commissioner Keon Hardemon and CRA Vice-Chair Commissioner Wifredo Gort joined the Southeast Overtown / Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) along with City officials, local business owners and residents to celebrate the Grand Re-Opening & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Overtown Shopping Plaza and Two Guys Restaurant at 1490 NW 3rd Ave.
The ceremony marked the completion of a $1.5 million renovation to the Overtown Shopping Plaza as well as the Grand Re-Opening of Two Guys Restaurant. The Overtown Shopping Plaza is owned by the CRA and is considered to be the oldest and largest shopping center in the area, but without any significant renovations, had become rundown and was sorely in need of a facelift. In an effort to attract more businesses to the area, the CRA provided funding to renovate the shopping center. The improvements included interior renovations to a major portion of the building to make way for a major grocery store and the installation of: new impact windows, doors, and canopies to the entire building. The plaza also received façade enhancements such as painting and landscaping.
The renovations to the shopping plaza have already begun to attract new and existing businesses such as: Two Guys Restaurant, a popular local eatery in the neighborhood. The local restaurant, known best for its Caribbean infused delights, recently reopened at the shopping plaza after receiving a $150,000 grant from the CRA. The grant was awarded to assist with the build out of the new restaurant and is part of the CRA’s efforts to assist local businesses in the area.
Other local businesses such as Nancy Beauty Supply and Metro PCS have also recently moved into the shopping plaza. In addition to existing businesses, the shopping plaza will also have Top Value Supermarket as its anchor store. The supermarket is expected to open in the summer of 2015 and will be the first major grocery store in the area. Other tenants that have remained at the Overtown Shopping Plaza include: Regions Bank, the sole banking institution in Overtown, the City of Miami’s Overtown Neighborhood Enhancement Team Office, and the Overtown Business Resource Center.
