SOUL BASEL SHOWCASES ART, MUSIC AND CULTURE IN OVERTOWN

MIAMI, FL – NOV. 30, 2017 – As art enthusiast descend on South Florida for Miami’s Art Basel Week, a large collection of Black art from the African and Caribbean Diaspora will be in Overtown for Soul Basel 2017. Attendees can enjoy works of art, special events and musical performances,December 6th to December 10th during Miami’s Art Basel Week. Coined Soul Basel by local organizers, the five day affair will showcase art from world-renowned and emerging artisans at the area’s art, cultural and historic facilities.
The Funky Turns 40: Black Character Revolution Animation exhibition will be on display at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater, located at 819 NW 2nd Avenue. Funky Turns 40, presented by the Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc., will feature popular African-American cartoons and animated characters from the 1970s.The exhibition will open with a two-day celebration on December 6th and 7th at 7:00 p.m. featuring musical performances by the SOS Band, Doug E. Fresh and the Sugarhill Gang; hosted by comedian and radio personality Rickey Smiley of the popular nationally syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show. On December 8th, Miami City Commission Chairman Keon Hardemon & the Southeast Overtown / Park West CRA will host the Art of Conversation; a professional networking mixer with a film screening and Q&A.
The 7th edition of the Art Africa Miami Arts Fair: Back to Black: No On/Off Ramps is also set to kick off during Soul Basel Week. Art Africa Miami is located within walking distance of the Lyric Theater at two pavilions located at 919 NW 2nd Avenue (The Plaza at the Lyric) and at 920 NW 2nd Avenue (former Clyde Killens Pool Hall).Presented by the Urban Collective, this year’s exhibition features twenty-five artists from the United States, Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America. Art Africa will open on December 6th at 7:00 p.m. with The Black Party. Proceeds from the reception will benefit the Caribbean Strong Hurricane Relief Fund. On December 8th, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Art Africa will host an exciting art and tech workshop for youth powered by Code Fever Miami. Guest are also invited to attend a series of lectures by noted artists and scholars.
Soul Basel is a collaborative effort between the CRA, local organizations and the GMCVB Art of Black Miami to showcase Black art at the area’s art,culture and historic facilities and highlight Overtown during Miami Art Basel week.; general admission and event tickets are available online.Funky Turns 40 and the Art Africa Miami Arts Fair is sponsored and supported by the CRA and Chairman Hardemon, who is also the Chairperson of the CRA

- Our Voice Matters at the Ward Rooming House Gallery at 249 NW 9th Presented by local youth organization, Urgent Inc., Our Voice Matters features a multimedia exhibit of youth photography, film and crafts. FREE ADMISSION
- Urban Soul Experience: “The Resilience of Creativity” at 925 NW 2nd Court. Presented by Eye Urban TV and the urban engineers. Urban Soul Experience is an outdoor exhibition with art, food and entertainment intermixed with an eclectic blend of contemporary and street art. FREE ADMISSION
- “We’ll Look Over You-For Now!” at the Black Police Precinct & Courthouse Museum
at 480 NW 11th Street .Presented by City of Miami Black Police Precinct & Courthouse Museum and curated by Reginal (L.E.O.) O’Neal & Terence Price II. “We’ll Look Over You-For Now!” is a co-curated reflection of socially engaged artistry through the mediums of photography and mural tapestry. $15 ADMISSION
